What are cookie?

Cookies are small text strings that are stored on your computer when you visit certain pages on the Internet. Cookies can perform various functions, such as allowing you to navigate efficiently between pages, remembering your preferences, and generally improving the user experience on the site.

Cookies type

Cookies downloaded to your PC, smartphone, and tablet can also be read by other entities, different from those managing the website pages you visit. In fact, there are different types of cookies:
  • FIRST-PARTY COOKIES: These are stored to be retransmitted to the same sites during the next visit by the same user.
  • THIRD-PARTY COOKIES: A webpage may contain cookies from other sites, often for content such as advertising banners, images, videos, etc. Usually, these cookies are used for profiling purposes.
Cookies can also be classified based on their duration of stay on your hard disk:
  • SESSION COOKIES: These have a duration limited to a single browsing session and are automatically deactivated when the user closes the browser.
  • PERMANENT COOKIES: These have a predetermined expiration date and will remain stored and active on your hard disk until deleted, continuing to collect information during different browsing sessions.

Cookies can be classified based on the purpose they serve:

  • TECHNICAL COOKIES: These are strictly necessary for the functioning of the site and the provision of related services. They ensure normal navigation and use of the site. These cookies are always first-party cookies. They are useful because they make web navigation faster and more efficient, facilitating actions such as online purchases, authentication to restricted areas, or recognizing the language you prefer. As per current privacy regulations, your consent is not required for the installation of such cookies. However, you can block technical cookies by changing your browser settings (see point 13). Please note that blocking technical cookies may compromise your ability to access and use the full functions of the site.

    Technical cookies can include:
  1. Navigation or session cookies: These are essential for authenticating on the website (e.g., making a purchase or accessing a restricted area). They are typically session cookies and are deactivated when the browser is closed.
  2. Functionality cookies: These cookies store your preferences (e.g., language, region) so that you don’t have to reset them during subsequent visits. Functionality cookies are often persistent, staying on your computer after closing the browser until the expiration date or deletion.
  • ANALYTICS OR MONITORING COOKIES: These cookies are used by website operators to collect aggregated data on the number of users and how they visit the site, helping compile general statistics. They are useful for reporting purposes. Your consent is required for the use of these cookies.
  • PROFILING OR MARKETING COOKIES: These cookies are used to monitor and profile users during web browsing, studying their habits to send targeted and personalized advertising. Italian regulations require explicit consent for these cookies.

    Profiling cookies can be:

  1. Preference cookies: These allow a website to remember your preferences, such as your preferred language or region. These cookies can be disabled, but some services may become unusable.
  2. Marketing/profiling cookies, content, and social plugins: These cookies monitor website visitors to display relevant and engaging ads, increasing the value for publishers and third-party advertisers. These are typically third-party cookies. These cookies can be disabled, but some services may not be usable.
